Chartering
I’m Rich and will be the skipper for your trip.
As many of you will already know, tuna fishing is my passion and I was fortunate enough be part of the catch and release tagging programme for bluefins before the permit fishery started in 2024.
Since then, I’ve caught many bluefins and been welcomed to fish alongside some of the best big game fishermen in the country, gaining invaluable experience along the way.
After our successful investigations into the Dorset fishery in 2025 we look forward to having you aboard my Arcoa 1080 Sports fisher for the ultimate big game fishing experience from Portland Marina.
Falco Mari is a twin engine flybridge fast fisher that’s been rigged for tuna fishing with some of the best sports fishing equipment available from around the world.
With the full range of products from our tackle company at your disposal we can completely customise your trip to your preferred style, with the use of trolling lures, live baiting, popping and Jigging setups.
The boats layout has been built with the modern big game angler in mind, with a large rear deck incorporating twin live bait wells and access to the water via the large rear door and swim platform.
The flybridge allows us to get a better angle to spot busting tuna from much further away than you would be able see from deck level and the inboard engines on shafts makes fighting big tuna much easier without having to worry about outboard motors and running gear getting in the way during the fight.
The spacious cabin has all the conveniences you’d expect from a fast fisher with modern cooking facilities, as well as a separate washroom, which all make for a comfortable day out at sea.
In recent years bluefin tuna have arrived in our waters in huge numbers, mainly due to an increase in population which was the result of the multi annual recovery programme that was introduced by ICCAT in 2007.
Book a CharterBack in 2012 we started to see Bluefin tuna appearing in coastal waters to the far west, mainly around Lands End, Newlyn and into Falmouth Bay.
Since then a trend for the tuna to push further east with every year that passes has begun to emerge, which lead to the dawn of the Plymouth fishery around 2021, putting Devon firmly onto the map as a big game fishing destination in the UK where good numbers of bluefins were being caught and tagged for the catch and release tagging programme (CHART).
Fast forward a few more years to 2024 and with the advent of the permitted recreational fishery we started to see big shoals of bluefin tuna arriving in Dorset around Portland, which seems to be a magnet for Giant bluefins, especially in the race around the bill.
What does a Portland Bluefin Adventure have to offer?
Throughout the season the shallows around the island are now home to Dorset’s big tuna fishery, where we’ll be mainly focusing on dawn raids with the trolling tackle and live bait for the trophy fish of a lifetime.
These fish are generally in small groups or lone fish, although the aerial displays are off the scale good, with Giant tuna, often coming completely out the water in all directions.
We also have good numbers of school tuna regularly showing at various locations to the south of the island, which we can make use of whilst we’re waiting for the tide to ease around the bill.
These fish are often busting in reasonable sized shoals and are perfect for picking off on the trolled gear.
We’ve also located an area to the east where we find mainly ‘fun sized tuna’ ideal for the top water spinning action and lighter jigging setups, so we can have good mixed day inshore if you wanted to combine different styles. These fish are some of the smallest bluefins I’ve ever seen, so good fun, even for less athletic members of the family.
Offshore we have the banks out in Lyme Bay where the Tuna become resident throughout September until the end of the season. Expect huge busts of school sized tuna with the odd bigger one amongst them. The action can be fast and furious offshore and well worth the extra travelling time.
